Now that EPA and DOE have agreed that EPA is in charge of the Energy Star program, a proposal has been published that will integrate existing lighting performance specifications.
Comments on the proposal are requested by January 8, 2010.
There are currently four separate Energy Star performance specifications that address lighting. The proposal addresses lighting in three primary areas:
1. Residential light fixtures
2. Residential (replacement) lamps
3. Commercial/industrial light fixtures.
For now, EPA and DOE are proposing to leave the RLF and SSL specifications in place. However, eligibility to quality LED-based fixtures under RLF V4.2 will be limited to decorative fixtures. The new proposal makes the number of fixtures that could qualify much more smaller as its specifications are much more specific.
In the long term, EPA is working to create a national standard for LED light engine testing.
