"New LED Lights Going Up In Chico, California..."

"CHICO, Calif. -- Workers in Chico started putting up more than 1,100 new LED streetlights on Tuesday.

Its part of a plan to, not only improve lighting, but also save the city money.

Chico recieved a $650,000 dollar federal grant to replace almost a fifth of the city's lights with the energy-efficient lights. In the long run, it should save an estimated 60-thousand dollars a year.

Lights are already being replaced downtown, and will soon be put up in other heavily traveled areas like East 20th Street and The Esplanade.

Ruben Martinez, General Services Director for Chico, said, "It is going to look nicer and we believe it is going to be a safer type of lighting. It feels like it's more evenly dispersed and people have a sense that it's better lit, especially in the evening."

The light replacement project should be finished by early April."
