Philadelphia improves energy efficiency of traffic lights

Philadelphia has begun the task of replacing 55,000 incandescent green and yellow traffic signals with energy efficient light-emitting diode (LED) arrays. In approximately six months, when the project is completed, the new lights will conserve enough energy to power 700 homes and save the city $1 million a year in electric costs. The city previously installed red LED lights back in the 1990s.

The $6 million project was funded in part by a grant from the Department of Energy and from PECO's Smart Ideas program. Smart Ideas is the name given to PECO's Act 129 programs. The Act requires utilities to achieve 10 percent of their total required electricity and demand savings from federal, state and local governments - including municipalities, school districts, institutions of higher education and non-profits.

If you are a residential or commercial customer, PECO Smart Ideas has a wide variety of energy saving programs for you as well. Visit http://www.pecosmartideas.com for more information. For more information on other utility Act 129 programs, go to http://www.pennfuture.org/energy_mekc.aspx.
