"FirstEnergy/Allegheny Energy merger settlement boosts clean energy..."

"The PUC approved the merger between FirstEnergy and West Penn/Allegheny Power. As part of this order, the PUC approved a comprehensive settlement that helps bring clean energy to FirstEnergy and West Penn/Allegheny ratepayers.

The settlement provides $4 million for West Penn's Low-Income Usage Reduction Program (LIURP); ensures a $3.8 million contribution to the West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund (WPPSEF); requires deployment of smart meters to at least 90 percent of customers by December 31, 2018; requires the new company to purchase 40 percent of the companies' AEPS solar requirements for 2011-2021 through long-term contracts; and provides $1 million in funding each to the Keystone HELP program and the Pennsylvania Sunshine Program.

PennFuture participated in the negotiations to win the funding for Keystone HELP and worked alongside the solar industry and DEP on the long-term contracts for solar which are essential to the financing of large-scale solar projects in Pennsylvania.

The FirstEnergy/Allegheny settlement is the latest agreement PennFuture has negotiated for renewable energy and efficiency investments in Pennsylvania."
